Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass | USA | 92 mins

The Duplass Brothers (The Puffy Chair, Baghead) return with this flawlessly uncomfortable comedy about a forty-something divorcée John (John C. Reilly) whose blossoming romance with single mum Molly (Marisa Tomei) is unexpectedly thwarted by her over-attentive and slyly manipulative son Cyrus (Jonah Hill). The tone of embarrassment, established when John’s ex-wife (Catherine Keener) barges into his home and discovers him in a highly compromising position, continues to ramp up over the course of the film as war breaks out over Molly’s affections.

Leading lights of the Mumblecore movement, the Duplass Brothers are working here with bigger budgets and known stars; however they smartly retain the independent feel of the earlier films allowing these bright comic actors an improvisational reign that heightens the wince-factor and deepens the emotional register of this highly enjoyable film.

'Awkward, yet thoroughly hilarious' – Neil Miller, Film School Rejects.
