Written, directed and performed by then-19-year-old Xavier Dolan, I Killed My Mother received three awards in Director’s Fortnight at Cannes 2009 and rapidly became the most-talked-about debut film of the year. Dolan plays Hubert, a modish gay teenager whose co-dependent relationship with his divorced mother is going from bad to truly horrific. In his eyes, her irritating tastelessness and monstrous love have become emotionally lethal; for her, his self-obsessed behaviour and new ideas feel exclusionary; this irresolvable tension results in constantly escalating, toxic arguments that alternate between the terrifying and riotously funny.
Stylish, resolutely queer and irreverent, Dolan knows one or two things about the French New Wave and pop art and he successfully combines this awareness with a lucid ear for dialogue in this incredibly assured and uncomfortably honest film.
'A coming-of-age tale as ferociously raw as its teller' – Rick Groen, The Globe and Mail.
