Sonic wunderkind Omar Rodriguez Lopez (Mars Volta, At the Drive In) wrote, directed and produced this hallucinogenic film in which he also stars as Barlam, a nerdy young guy with a penchant for strangulation and model cars (well, ’67 Mercury Cougars, to be precise). Aimless and on the verge of some psychotic meltdown (if he hasn’t already had one), Barlam is hanging out in El Paso, Texas, harbouring secret desires for his drug-addicted sister, obsessed with his doppelganger and killing time with hustlers and whores.
Slashed through with an iridescent colour palette that accentuates the kitschy Mexican religious decor and visually matches the psychedelic sound and music composition, this is in-your-face Catholic guilt tripped-out on bucketloads of nihilism and tortured sexuality.
