A tiny loggerhead turtle is born on a Caribbean beach; after digging her way out of her sandy nest she heads to the sea to begin a lifetime’s journey. The plucky little creature confronts menacing crabs and diving pelicans before finding safety in a raft of seaweed and drifting in the warm waters of the Gulf Stream. Her flippers are only the size of butterfly wings, but she strikes out across the Atlantic braving sharks and super tankers, oil slicks and plastic bags. She swims north to the Arctic then across to Africa, getting bigger and bigger each year, until it’s time to head south and find a mate.
Turtle: The Incredible Journey, a beautifully shot documentary narrated by Miranda Richardson, celebrates this incredible feat while reminding us that the changes to our environment have made the loggerhead’s life even more fragile.
